Accidental artsy shot with the new camera

Date: August 15, 2004
Time: 0600 -- 0930
Spot(s): dhlh
Conditions: Light winds, typical dawn patrol crowd
Swell: Mostly tradewind swell
Surf: 1-3' Haw'n

Words: Gave my new Sony DSC-U60 its first surf test. The 'house was in typical form, with some nice peaks coming through. The camera was a bit tough to get used to, with a much longer setup time compared to the disposables. But the results were surprisingly good (and of course immediate). Definitely some serious potential.

As for the surfing, after trying out Justin's board, I decided to get myself a tail pad--Dakine Andy Irons model. And you know what, the difference was immediately noticeable. The pad helped me quickly position my back foot to maximize turning. In fact, on a couple of waves, I pulled it around hard enough to slide out the tail about a millimeter.

Surfing like Andy Irons? Not quite. But that split-second of release felt sweet.

As for surfing with the camera, well, on one wipeout the camera bounced back at my head conking me pretty good. Hope the camera is durable enough to last a few seasons.

Aloha from Paradise,
