SURF OBSERVATIONS
Nightfall in San Diego -- 7/25/99
Darkness falls...
Got into San Diego in the late eve. After baggage problems, a rental car fiasco and accommodation blues, I was rarin’ to check out Windansea.
The sun had long set behind the hazy sky, and darkness was quickly falling. Still, the glassy overhead waves with only three guys out were too tempting to pass up.
I was fortunate to have brought my fullsuit. The water temp had dropped about 12 degrees (F) in two weeks to the low 60’s. Brrrr!!!
I caught only one decent wave before heading in. Typical Windansea wave. Drop, cutback, stall while the wave walled up, repeat steps 1, 2, & 3, several times.
I was looking forward to meeting up with alt.surfers Rontiki and Tom Tweed at dawn. Tomorrow was going to be a good day.
Aloha from La Jolla (yes, it’s paradise too!),
